My main claim to fame is my ac3 and mpeg2 decoders, which are components of the LiViD (Linux Video) project. I also hack on sound drivers when I get bored. I'm current employed by Nortel Networks in Ottawa as a Modem/DSP hacker.

I think I finally managed to get rid of my hangover from the Helixcode party at OLS. For 2001, I'll remember to schedule a post-OLS Betty Ford clinic visit.

Aaron's party tip #39: Never, ever mix Kilkenny and Chardonnay. Duh.

Blah. Another wasted evening trying to squeeze some more performance out of libmpeg2. Nothing sucks more than reverting three hours of hacking after discovering it makes absolutely no difference to the performance. I blame the pitifully small cache on the celeron. I'd like to meet the Intel engineer who said that a 16 kB cache would be fine in for a 1998 cpu. Grrr.

On the brighter side, I'm no longer a corporate drone. As of the start of July, I'll be a Modem Hacker for Soma Networks instead. One of the best features of working for Soma is that they like to stick their offices downtown. The Ottawa office is going to be right in the heart of the market. Yay, I get to rollerblade to work.

I finally finished up the libvo changes today and checked it in. Unfortunately, I still have a large pile of patches to process still. I also got a chance to chat with walken again about the a/v scheduler. Amazingly, we almost agree on how its going to work. I've set a goal to try and get a release out by the time OLS hits.

Anyone out there know where I can find docs (offical or not) on the .asf (active streaming) file format?

It seems that everyone+dog is going to work at Zero Knowledge Systems. It seems like a very cool company. I think I would like to be an Evil Genius (tm). There's something appealing about being paid to think about abstract math all day.

Things are progressing well on the DVD front. I've managed to tweak my MPEG-2 codec to the point where realtime playback is possible on a pII-450 (ish). I have plans to bring this down to the pII-300 level sometime soon. Our major stumbling block now is dealing with the somewhat broken sync mechanisms of the MPEG-2 systems standard (which were further mutated by the DVD folks). Most of the problems stem from the painful 3:2 pulldown mechanism and the fact that the timestamps in a DVD stream aren't contiguous.

Hopefully if all goes well, you'll see a full fanfare alpha release in a month or so (famous last words).
