Freshmeat page:

The engine behind Origin's game, Ultima 7, was (arguably) considered one of their finest efforts. Due to misfortunes and the changing vicissitudes of time, the source-code to this engine was reportedly lost.

The compiled DOS binaries were also linked with an unusual memory manager that incorporated some deep voodoo and has made running this program on modern machines a difficult, arduous and sometimes impossible task.

The Exult project aims to interpret the existing data-files and produce a game that is playable on a variety of hardware and OS platforms.

There's even some hopes of producing a worthwhile RPG game engine from the whole. Exult is mostly feature complete with support for both Black Gate and Serpent Isle.
