Freshmeat page:

Ghostscript started life as a PostScript interpreter. It now handles both PostScript and PDF, and is quite compatible with PostScript LanguageLevel 3 and PDF 1.3.

In addition to rasterizing, Ghostscript is also good at converting PostScript files to PDF format, ie very similar functionality to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, except commandline rather than GUI.

Ghostscript has a somewhat unusual licensing model. The most recent version is released under the Aladdin Free Public License. While this license is fairly similar in spirit to free software licenses, it does not qualify under the Debian Free Software Guidelines. Each AFPL version is released approximately 1 year later under the GNU GPL.

raph is now the maintainer of Ghostscript. He is actively recruiting people to work on various subprojects, particularly closer bindings with Gnome and other applications. Please contact him if you might be interested.

License: AFPL, GPL
