The Hurd will be the kernel for the GNU OS. The Hurd is a collection of servers running on top of a microkernel. The Hurd has many cool features, such as translators, that make it more than Just Unix. Debian has released a distribution based on the HURD. Although still in prerelease form, the distribution is fairly usable but missing some popular software such as X.

The Hurd Wiki is the best place to start if you want to learn more about the Hurd. If you're a programmer and have an interest in microkernels, the Hurd project could use your help!
