Freshmeat page:

RACE (Remote Administration in distributed Computing Environments) is an effort which arose from a diploma thesis (which arose from a certain admin's need for this) to be able to spread software and configuration updates easily to a number of computers in a network.

Currently it uses RPM for package management (in a not very elegant fashion) but it's designed with other package managers "in mind" (dpkg junkies: you're meant here).
