"A fast, high-precision GIS data projection utility which reads and writes shapefiles and supports Canadian NTv2 datum transformation."

A few years ago (fall, 1999), lots of government users and others in Canada were converting their GIS data to NAD83. They didn't have a free tool to bulk-convert their shapefiles to the new datum. So I wrote this thing in my spare time and published it as freeware. What can I say? I wasn't yet indoctrinated to open source at that time.

One of the key features of this application, as compared to commercially available NTv2 transformation utilities that I've tested, is that it's many times faster, yet produces equivalent results. Rather than just take the reference implementation of NTv2 (which was not made with performance in mind), I looked at what it needed to do, and reached the same result differently. I also made a very efficient shapefile reader/writer to keep I/O from slowing it down any more than it has to.

Anyway now SHPTRANS is free in the sense that matters here on Advogato. I'm hoping to share with and borrow from other projection-utility maintainers to extend the usefulness of this code.

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.
